In Episode 10, I talked about the spitfire of kindness that is Dolly Parton. In Episode 15, I followed up with a story about how Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream was making a Dolly Parton created flavor, Strawberry Pretzel Pie, to help support Dolly’s book charity Imagination Library. Imagination Library mails out books each month for kids from birth to kindergarten, to make sure that kids have access to good, age-appropriate, reading materials. These books are free and help underprivileged kids get a leg up on reading.
The limited-edition ice cream, was only going to have 10,000 units. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream knew it would go fast, but did not expect the demand to shut down their website. There were lines around the building at the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream stores. Pint’s of this flavor could be found being sold on eBay for $1,000. Dolly’s ice cream can no longer be bought in stores, and Jeni’s did a short 5,000 unit online release a week after its release. It is uncertain whether there will further releases, but if there are, they will probably sell out of those as well. This partnership looks like it was a big success and the true beneficiaries will be all the children that will continue to get free books to read.
